1. Briefly describe Annemarie and Ellen including a physical description of each girl and a brief description of each girl’s personality.
Adam- Annemarie and Ellen are best of friends. Ellen is a short stocky girl. She has dark hair and a nice and playful personality. Annemarie is a taller and more lanky than Ellen. Annemarie has silvery blond hair flies back when she runs. She also id nice but, still a little commanding toward her little sister.

2. What is the De Frie Danske? Why does Mrs. Johansen believe the soldiers stopped the girls in the street?
Adam- The De Frie Danske is a illegal newspaper that mean "Free Danes". It tells on how they are bombing German factories for war supplies and other vehicle transports. Mrs. Johansen believed that the soldiers stopped the girls because they were edgy about the resistance being more active lately.


3. What does Annemarie understand about the Resistance? What can the reader infer about Peter Neilsen from the information about him in this chapter?
Adam- Annemaria understands that the resistance is a group of people that are resisting the German rule with bombing and other distractions to set back the German army on supplies and other needs. I know that this Peter Neilson knew the this family through some source and visited more than none.

4. Why do you suppose Mrs. Rosen cautions the children to “be one of the crowd, always.” Be one of the many. Be sure that they never have reason to remember your face”?
Adam- She cautions the girls to become one of the crowd because then the Germans would have no reason to single you out. If the Germans singled you out they would most likely come and search your home.

chapter 2

1. Papa tells Annemarie the story of the young boy who tells the German soldier that King Christian does not need special body guards because “all of Denmark is his bodyguard.” What does this story reveal to the reader about the Danish people
Adam- This revels that if the king would be in any of harms way the Danish people would save their king. This shows that the Danish people are loyal to the royalty no-matter what the conditions may be.

2. Foreshadowing is the literary term for an author’s use of hints to suggest what action is to come. In what sense might this passage be an exaple of foreshadowing?
“Yes,” (Papa) said at last. “It is true. Any Danish citizen would die for Kings Christian, to protect him.”
“You too, Papa?”
“Yes”
“And Mama?”
“Mama, too.”
Annemarie shivered again. “Then I would too, Papa. If I had to.

This passage is an example of foreshadowing for action in the future. This passage says that somebody might be injured or killed to protect their king.

3. For what reasons did King Christian surrender to the Nazis?
Adam- King Christian surrendered to the Nazis right away for a few reasons. He surrendered because they didn't have enough soldiers and way too many lives would be lost in struggling to stay free from Nazi Germany.

Adam- Peter has changed in many different ways. He used to when Lise was alive be a happy, funny, nice and make the girls laugh all the time. His visits used to be long and happy. Now the visits are brief and only a few words are exchanged.

Adam- The three hardships the people of Copenhagen must endure are; shortages of food and other household goods. The other hardship is important stores being closed because the owners are jewish. The final hardship is Nazi soldiers standing on every corner enforcing the rules laid down by the German and stopping suspicious people.

2. Why is Mama “troubled” when Annemarie tells her the button shop is closed?
Adam- Mama is troubled when the button shop closes because she knows the Germans are starting to "relocated" and her friends are jewish.

3. What information about the Germans in Denmark does Peter bring when he comes to visit?
Adam- Peter brings the information that the Germans in Denmark are closing down all shops and stalls owned by jewish people. He calls this "relocation".

4. Annemarie realizes that her friend Ellen is Jewish and is in danger. Worried about her friend, Annemarie says, “Now I think that all of Denmark must be a bodyguard for the Jews.” Later in her bed, Annemarie wonders if she would really be brave enough to risk her life for Denmark’s Jews. Adam- This passage might foreshadow an event that Annemarie or her family might have to protect Ellen and her family.

Adam- She believes she saw the fireworks at Tivoli Gardens because she could see them over the treetops and it was he birthday so mama said," All those fireworks are just for you Kirsti."

Adam- Annemarie's father thinks that the jewish relocation is the Nazi's starting to take all the jewish people and put them into concentration camps.

Adam- I think Peter does this because when Ellen's parents will not be questioned if they are traveling alone. Ellen stays with Annemarie because they spend so much time together that the pretend to be sisters.

1. When Annemarie and Ellen talk about Lise’s accident, Annemarie remembers that her “Papa looked so angry. He made one hand into a fist, and he kept pounding it into the other hand.” What does this description of Papa’s reaction to Lise’s death suggest to the reader about the nature of her accident?
Adam- I think if papa did this the accident could of been a few things. The accident could of happened because of the rain. The driver also could of been drunk.(most likely not) The accident was a total shock to all the family because it was two weeks before her wedding.

2. Ellen is worried that the Germans will come into the Johansen home and take her away. Annemarie reassures Ellen by telling her that she is safe. Why does Annemarie believe Ellen is safe?
Adam- Annemarie thinks Ellen is safe because she thinks the Germans are making an empty threat and will not follow up. She thinks they do this to scare people.

3. Why does Pape tear the three photographs out of the album?
Adam- Papa tears the three photographs out of the album to show the German soldiers that the three daughters pictures when they were born and Lise had dark hair when she was born and Ellen had dark hair because the German soldier asked why their family had mostly blonds but, one black haired.

1. What are Papa and Uncle Henrik talking about when they talk about “cigarettes”?
Adam- Papa and Uncle Henrik talk about cigarettes when a jewish person is coming to his house. When Papa is on the phone he says, "I am sending a pack of cigarettes". Which means I am sending you a jewish person.

2. For what reason is Uncle Henrik’s home a good place to take a Jewish refugee?

Adam- There are two reasons Uncle Henrick's house is a nice refuge for jewish people. His house is in the middle of the woods and he is a fisherman so he has to get up at daybreak to go to the harbor but, he has to milk his cow first.

Adam- Mama's relationship with her brother Henrick was and still one full of teasing and jokes. Mama is really happy to have a brother like Henrik she also has a really nice joke she says to Henrik every time she sees him.

2. What is different about this visit to Uncle Henrik’s house from visits Annemarie has made there in times past?

Adam- When Annemarie visited Henrick's house this time she felt there was sence of tension in the air. The laughing was half-heartily, the jokes were dismissed early.

chapter 8

1.Most of the day Annemarie and Ellen happily play until Uncle Henrik returns to the house. What two statements does he make that worry or puzzle Annemarie? How does she react when she hears these statements?
Adam- the two statements that Uncle Henrick said were," Tomorrow is a good day for fishing" and, " I will leave for the boat after supper. I will stay on the boat all night". Annemarie reaction is she reconizes the first statement from her Papa asking the same question. The second statement she has no clue what the meaning could be.

Adam- I think the mourners are ether one of two things. I think the mourners could be all jewish people that want to get over to Sweden. The other thing the mourners could be are they could be members of the resistance that are on a mission.

2. How does Uncle Hunrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte?
Adam- Uncle Henrick explains to Annemarie that he and Mama lied because the less people know the braver they can be. He says to brave you only need what you need to know.

Adam- She understands why Uncle Henrick and Mama are lying to her. She understands what it means to be brave when you have to be.

Adam- The familiar phrase in that psalm is," He numbers the stars one by one."

2. How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake?
Adam- I think the people felt unconformable and a little weird because they knew great-aunt Birtie did not exist. So they were just sitting there waiting for the soldiers to pass after they took a look.

3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket?
Adam- Mama keeps the soldiers from opening the casket by saying great-aunt Birtie died of typhus and the disease could still be living on the body.

4. Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book?
Adam- I think the significance of the title of the book is that all the Jews were escaping during the night and early dawn so they saw the stars and knew God was looking out for them in all they do.

chapter 11

1. What is in the casket?
Adam- The casket is suppose to hold the dead body great-aunt Birtie but, instead they're is other items. In the casket is blankets, clothes, and coats for if the Jewish people get cold on the voyage.

2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
Adam- The medicine that Peter gave the baby was a drug. The effects of the drug was that the baby would stay asleep and not cry.

3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
Adam- When the soldier came into Uncle Henrick's house and asked who died. He directed the question at Annemarie and since she could only answer the question by saying great-aunt Birtie. This helped because she knew that great-aunt Birtie did not exsist but, that was all she knew about this gathering.

Adam- She does not think of herself as a carefree child once she understands the concept of pride. She sees the Rosens in their mismatched clothes and how usually Ellen is wearing nice new clothes. She understands that pride has a complicated understanding.

Adam- Yes, I think she will meet soldiers on the way to Uncle Henrick's boat because soldier are all throughout every city in Denmark patrolling every were.

2. What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?
Adam- Annemarie observes that waiting gets impatient and tiring when you have to wait for somebody.
Doesn't she also think that it is sometimes frightening to wait for a loved one not knowing what is happening not knowing what is happening to him/her?

3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety.
Adam- Annemarie worries about her mothers safety because the job she is doing is dangerous. She is leading jews and that helping with the resistance she could be executed if caught.

Adam- Annemarie volunteers to take the packet to Uncle Henrick because Mama has a broken ankle, little Kirsti would not get there in time, and there was no one else around.

Adam- Mama does not tell Annemarie what is in the basket because if Annemarie was stopped by soldiers she would not even know what was in the basket.

Adam- Little red riding hood would be Annemarie because she is the girl delivering food to other people. Little red riding hood was going to give food to the grandma and Annemarie was giving food to her uncle. The in the story stopped little red riding hood and the German soldiers stopped Annemarie.

2. In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts?
Adam- The reality that she confronts is the Germans have invaded Denmark and do not tolerate them. She sees the way they treat the Danish jews and she thinks this war could go for a while.
Does she also recognize how important it is for the Ellen and the other Jews' successful that she play her part successfully?

Adam- My reaction to how the soldiers treated Annemarie is one of pity. I knew from other books that the Germans were always cruel and harsh. I pity Annemarie because she was really scared out of her wits because the Germans stopped her.

Adam- In the beginning of the book when the Germans stop her and Ellen from racing on the street. When the Germans invade their home they harshly wake them from sleep. In the end part of the book when the German soldiers take the bread from the basket and feed it the dogs.

3. Why does Annemarie act like Kirsti?
Adam- Annemarie acts like Kirsti because she is trying to be a little girl that does not know anything but, to get the lunch to Uncle Henrick.

Adam- No, I do not think that Uncle Henrick said anything that surprised me at all.

Adam- Uncle Henrick defines brave as not thinking about about the dangers. Just thinking about what you have to do. Yes, I think if this was the definition of brave Annemarie would be very brave.

Adam- The Rosens were beneath the boat planks and are now safly across to Sweden.

Adam- Uncle Henrick describing how the secret rooms are used and how they pile dead fish on the room trapdoors. When the Germans look for Jews they get their boots dirty and they hate that. What about when Annemarie is with Uncle Henrik and the cat falls in the pail of milk?

1. This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration?
Adam- The Danish people dust out their friends homes and hang freedom symbols in the windows.

2. How did Peter die? How did Lise really die?
Adam- Peter was caught on the job for the resistance and shot in Ryvangen square in Copanhagen. Lise was working for the resistance too. The Nazi's found out about their secret hiding place. One night they raided the place and Lise ran away only to be run over by one of the Nazi's cars.

3. Where does Annemarie hide Ellen’s Star of David necklace?

Adam- Annemarie hides the Star of David from Ellen's neck in the trunk were the family is storing Lise's wedding dress and pillow cases.

Adam- The Nazi invading Denmark in 1940. King Christian surrendered to the Nazi's. He did this because he knew that many Danish lives would be lost if they fought the Nazi's. The relocation of the Jews. The Nazi army was letting the Danish settle down before they started the relocation. One fourth of the Jewish population made it across to Sweden from help of the Danish fisherman. The handkerchiefs the the Danish fisherman used. The the handkerchiefs were used to stop German dogs. The handkerchief had a mixture of rabbit blood that a attracted the dogs then, some cocaine to ruin the dogs sense of smell.

Adam- The Germans took over Denmark because Denmark can provide food to the German army and there are railways that can be used to transport food.
